This movie has a lot going against it. First, it's a sequel to one of the most celebrated movies of all time. It also recycles the predecesor's premise and as its main protagonist, it gets a comedic sidekick. It wouldn't Pixar, however, if they didn't find a way to cook up something special.
The key player in all of is undoubtedly Andrew Stanton, the movie's director. Over time, he proved himself to be the beating heart of Pixar. Just look at the screenplay for one of Dory's follow-ups in Toy Story 4. That movie was impossible to make but Stanton, this time as a screenwriter, came up with an idea that made the movie more than a worthwhile addition to the franchise. Stanton carries Finding Dory as well. The movie is full of action and fun but it also packs a big emotinal punch. As a bonus, we get a terrific new character in Hank the octopus, one of the best animated characters ever.
Safe for the last action scene, which is just too over-the-top and doesn't fit Dory's world, the movie works well in all its aspects. It's a beautiful return to the undewater world we fell in love many years ago. I wouldn't mind taking one more dive. Finding Hank, anyone?
